How TOBRACEF Works

Ceftazidime

It is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Like other third-generation cephalosporins, it has broad spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Unlike most third-generation agents, it is active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, however it has weaker activity against Gram-positive microorganisms. Ceftazidime Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) which in turn inhibit the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, thus inhibiting cell wall biosynthesis. Bacteria eventually lyse due to ongoing activity of cell wall autolytic enzymes (autolysins and murein hydrolases) while cell wall assembly is arrested.

Tobramycin

It is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat various types of bacterial infections, particularly Gram-negative infections. Tobramycin has bactericidal activity against many Gram-negative aerobes and against some strains of staphylococci. Aminoglycosides are taken up into sensitive bacterial cells by an active transport process that is inhibited in anaerobic, acidic or hyperosmolar environments. Within the bacterial cell aminoglycosides bind primarily to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis and generating errors in the transcription of the genetic code. The manner in which cell death is brought about is not fully elucidated. Concentration of Tobracef in different tissues is given in below table:
